Looking to increase the likelihood that you show up first in people’s searches? We’ve helped clients in a wide range of industries achieve improved rankings over the years and that top ranking is more important today than ever before. Google has increased the number of ads that appear above the fold from three to four for many search queries. On some searches, the top organic result is below the fold, which means organic traffic is dropping precipitously for many searches. On mobile, organic traffic is even lower due to the small screen size.
What’s a business to do? Here are some tips and tricks to help you stay at the top for SEO.
1. Make your keywords relevant with the times.
We’re in 2017 now, so people will be using searches such as “best spring dress style of 2017” and similar searches involving 2017. While these phrases will have lower traffic volumes than their root terms, good, timely content will be more likely to rank and click-through-rates will be higher. For many searches, fresh content matters.
2. Use Google’s Autocomplete feature.
Google has a great bit of functionality called autocomplete. When you start typing a search term into Google, you will notice that it gives recommendations for what it thinks you’re searching for. You can jot down these different keywords and phrases, which are related to your own, and it will give you ideas of what other phrases people are searching for and potentially include them in your own piece, or use them to create new pieces of content.
3. Investigate the competition.
Knowing what your competitors are doing is an important piece of information. Visit your competitor’s websites and see what they’re doing. Investigate what they’re ranking for by typing your search queries into google. If you have money to spend, you can pay for software like Moz Pro, which allows you to track your competitors among other features. You might find keywords you hadn’t thought of using that are relevant to your business as well.
4. Make sure your titles and meta descriptions are unique and accurate.
Page titles and meta descriptions are the low hanging fruit in the SEO world. Making sure that you have taken care of these two elements is an important step to improving your SEO. And in recent years, some studies have shown that user engagement metrics like Click-through-rate can improve your search ranking, making good titles and meta descriptions even more important!
5. Improve your URL structure.
For example, Let’s say your website is “BaseballCards.com” and you are selling baseball cards on your website. A specific page for rare cards looks like “BaseballCards.com/00035/339fdf.” This will look confusing to customers and hurt that specific page’s ranking when being crawled. However, if it says “BaseballCards.com/RareCards” then users are more likely to trust the page and click through to it and Google is more likely to rank the page higher in their results.
There is so much more that goes into SEO, but it is always important to make sure that you have covered all the basics. You can’t build a house on a weak foundation, so it is important to get these things right.
